A priceless pocket gold watch discovered from the body of the richest passenger aboard the Titanic was sold in England for £1.17 million ($1.46 million) on Saturday. The antique object, linked to the historic 1912 shipping disaster, was auctioned at a record sum, said auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son.
The watch, engraved with the initials JJA, was recovered along with the body of Astor a week after the Titanic sank. His other personal belongings such as a diamond ring, gold and diamond cufflinks were also found.
“Astor is well known as the richest passenger aboard the R.M.S. Titanic and was thought to be among the richest people in the world at that time, with a net worth of roughly $87 million (equivalent to several billion dollars today,)” the auction house wrote.
The 14-carat gold watch belonged to business magnet John Jacob Astor IV who died at the age of 47 during the sinking of Titanic in the early hours of April 15, 1912. He was reputed to be one of the richest men in the world at that time. He died after having helped his wife, Madeleine, on board one of the lifeboats. She survived the disaster.
Other artefacts found from the ship that were sold earlier include a violin, a rare menu from Titanic’s first-class restaurant and a pocket watch from another man who died in the 1912 tragedy.
